What is a design engineer, anyway?
Design engineer is a weird title. Here's how I think about it.
The seam
Most companies have a seam between design and engineering. Designs get handed off, something is built, and the result is close to what was designed but not quite. The seam is where details die.
A design engineer works on that seam. They care about the final pixel, the motion curve, the empty state, the error state — the stuff that doesn't fit in a Figma file.
Why it matters now
Products are getting more interactive, more animated, more felt. The gap between a design file and the shipped product has never been wider. Someone has to close it.
That's the job.
