Building quiet interfaces
The best interfaces disappear. You don't think about them — you think through them.
Restraint as a feature
Every pixel, every shadow, every animation is a claim on the user's attention. Restraint is the discipline of asking whether that claim is worth it.
When I started, I thought good design meant adding: more contrast, more motion, more detail. Over time I realised the opposite. Good design is usually subtraction — removing everything that isn't pulling its weight.
What quiet feels like
A quiet interface feels confident. It trusts the content. It doesn't need to shout, because it has nothing to prove.
- Typography does most of the work
- Color is used sparingly, for meaning
- Motion is purposeful, not decorative
- Hierarchy comes from space, not weight
The tradeoff
Minimalism isn't an aesthetic choice — it's an ergonomic one. Fewer things on screen means less cognitive load, faster scanning, and more room for the things that actually matter.
That's the whole trick.
